Preparations for the 2015 Margaret River Drug Aware Surf Pro are underway with Surfers Point in Prevelly getting a ‘spring clean’ by Shire of Augusta Margaret River staff.

Works being completed include weeding and mulching garden beds, mowing, pruning, minor maintenance of infrastructure, cleaning of facilities, mowing and pruning.

Shire Works Manager Craig Young said a considerable amount of work was going into preparing the whole precinct for the World Surfing League competition, which was upgraded to a World Championship Tour event in 2013.

“Up to 5000 people attend Surfers Point on competition days, with up to 50,000 people visiting the precinct over the two week period,” he said.

“Preparing the site early and timing our works well ensures the area copes with the significant increase in pedestrian traffic and the infrastructure erected on site.”

Mr Young said the presentation of the precinct was also important for the promotion of the Margaret River Region as a tourism destination.

“It’s important that we create a safe, clean and comfortable audience experience at the venue so they come back again next year,” he said.

“We also want people viewing the event online or on television all around the world to see Margaret River as a place they want to visit.

“Tourism is a huge economic driver for our region and we want to leverage off this event as much as possible.

“It’s the care in the detail that makes the difference to the success of an event.”

Landscaping works will also be completed at Riflebutts in preparation for the event, which is scheduled to be held 15-26 April 2015.

There will be minor traffic and pedestrian interruptions during the works.
