Actor Samuel Johnson is riding his unicycle into Margaret River on his journey around Australia to raise awareness and $1million for breast cancer research – and break a world record!
Well know Australian personality Samuel Johnson is gearing up to arrive in Margaret River on the 25 June on his 15,000km trip around Australia in an attempt to raise $1million for breast cancer research – and he is doing it on a unicycle!
Inspired by his sister Connie, who has been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, Samuel’s ‘Love Your Sister’ journey aims to remind all Australian women to be breast aware in an effort to promote early detection of breast cancer and improve survival rates. Samuel and Connie’s message to Australian women through ‘Love Your Sister’ is simple;
Don’t fall into the Booby Trap – Be Breast Aware!
“My Sister is an amazing woman – vibrant, compassionate and a fantastic mother. After the diagnosis, I spoke to her about what she wanted her legacy to be and told her that I wanted to send her off with a big bang” said Samuel. “I was thinking she would say something like skydiving, but instead I’ve been given the challenge of a lifetime – unicycling around Australia and raising breast cancer awareness!”
Starting from Melbourne on Friday, 15 February, 2013 and taking an entire year, Samuel’s ‘Love Your Sister’ unicycle journey has seen him venture through Victoria, South Australia, the Northern Territory and now he is in Western Australia after riding over 7,000km’s to get here. When he leaves WA, he will make his way through New South Wales and then Queensland to complete his journey
All funds raised will be donated to the Garvan Research Foundation, a world leader in breast cancer research and the Eden Monaro Cancer Support Group, which provides financial assistance and emotional support to cancer patients and their families.
In addition to breaking the world record for the most distance travelled on a unicycle , Samuel will be going up Mt Kosciusko, Ayres Rock and down Lake Eyre as well as performing a series of ‘dares’ set by the general public throughout his journey
“If getting me on a unicycle and slogging it out across the bumpy roads of Australia on a unicycle reminds women to feel their breasts for any lumps and bumps, then it will absolutely be worth it” said Samuel. “And in any case, sitting on a unicycle seat for a year should definitely prove that I truly love my sister!”
